Workshop identifies challenges, strategies for improving food safety
The workshop “Better Targeting Food Safety Investments in Low and Middle Income Countries,” hosted by the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), brought together policymakers, researchers, donors, and others to delve into the challenges impeding poor people’s access to safe foods throughout the world. Exploring ways of uplifting pig farmers’ livelihoods in northwest Vietnam
On 30 May 2017, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) co-hosted a stakeholder workshop in Hanoi, Vietnam. At the workshop, participants discussed research findings from a scoping study on improving pig value chains in the region and the objectives of a new research project which will assess how smallholder farmers in northwest Vietnam can add value to pig production by using maize grains as feed. Vietnam PigRISK project team shares findings on improving food safety in pig value chains
At the workshops, the project team reported key results of PigRISK achieved from June 2012 to May 2017 which focused on assessing food safety issues such as microbiological risk assessment of Salmonella, assessment of heavy metals and antibiotics residue in carcasses and feed, risk factors of contaminations along the value chains; and overall assessment of animal (pig) production and health. Gender-responsive solutions for sustainable livestock development
These gender-responsive solutions from the workshop will be raised to policymakers and development practitioners. And, if well implemented, would help women gain more benefits from slices of the livestock pie. ILRI pork safety project holds mid-term review in Vietnam
In March 2016 the PigRisk project, which focuses on food safety and pork value chains, held its mid-term review. This five-year project (2012–2017) aims to improve the livelihoods of rural and urban poor in Vietnam by creating better opportunities and incomes from pig value chains as a result of reduced risks associated with pork-borne diseases. The project is led by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). Continue reading

Developing capacity and South–South cooperation on livestock research: Beijing joint lab hosts three visiting scientists
Three scientists from South Asia are taking part in a six-week research visit at the Joint Laboratory on Livestock and Forage Genetic Resources (JLLFGR) in Beijing, China. This lab is jointly run by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and has been operating since 2004. Continue reading
