ILRI pork safety project holds mid-term review in Vietnam

In March 2016 the PigRisk project, which focuses on food safety and pork value chains, held its mid-term review. This five-year project (2012–2017) aims to improve the livelihoods of rural and urban poor in Vietnam by creating better opportunities and incomes from pig value chains as a result of reduced risks associated with pork-borne diseases. The project is led by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). Continue reading

ILRI research to shape pig breeding policy in Nagaland, India

Last month (15 December 2015), ILRI researchers and agriculture sector partners in Nagaland discussed the process of ‘framing a pig breeding policy’ in the state at a workshop that reviewed current evidence from ongoing pig farming research. The meeting also generated recommendations for a pig breeding policy in the state, which among other goals, aims to develop pig breeds/cross-breeds that are adaptable, productive and appropriate for the smallholder pig farmers in Nagaland. ILRI stresses need for sustainable use of animal genetics at high-level Southeast Asia agriculture symposium

The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) recently held the 2nd international conference on Agricultural and Rural Development in Southeast Asia (ARD2014) on 12-13 November 2014 in Manila, Philippines. This high-level conference addressed the theme, ‘Strengthening resilience, equity, and integration in ASEAN food and agriculture systems’. Key issues discussed at the meeting were productivity improvement, inclusive value chains, sustainability and poverty reduction, food security and food safety, institutions and governance and regional cooperation and integration. More than 450 representatives from international development agencies, research centres, academic institutions, governments and civil society attended the meeting. Continue reading
