On 30 May 2017, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) co-hosted a stakeholder workshop in Hanoi, Vietnam. At the workshop, participants discussed research findings from a scoping study on improving pig value chains in the region and the objectives of a new research project which will assess how smallholder farmers in northwest Vietnam can add value to pig production by using maize grains as feed.

A market study of the avocado, pepper, cassava and beef cattle value chains in Vietnam was recently completed. Funded by the CGIAR Research Program on Integrated Systems for the Humid Tropics (Humidtropics), the study was conducted in November 2014 by agricultural economists and researchers from ILRI, Tay Nguyen University and Western Highlands Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute.
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) was one of the participants at a high-level 74th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics (ISAE) held 18-20 December 2014 in Aurangabad, India.
Steve Staal, ILRI’s Regional Representative for East and Southeast Asia, delivered a keynote address at the meeting, where he emphasized the role smallholders will continue playing in meeting rising demand for livestock products in the country and the region.
In Nagaland, Northeast India, pigs are the preferred livestock species and most families rear one to three pigs either for household consumption or for selling or for both. Demand for pigs and pork is growing rapidly and currently outstrips local supply. Intensifying pig production systems and shifting from subsistence to more commercially-oriented production could significantly improve local livelihoods and increase cash income for farmers.
