Transforming livelihoods through livestock farmer groups in Northwest Vietnam

The CGIAR Initiative on Sustainable Animal Productivity for Livelihoods, Nutrition, and Gender Inclusion (SAPLING) was launched in Vietnam in 2022 and aims to transform the livestock sector in Son La Province by the end of 2024. Known locally as ‘Chăn-hênh,’ the initiative focuses on addressing the challenges faced by ethnic minority communities through five intervention work packages. A significant aspect of Chăn-hênh’s strategy is the formation and support of livestock farmer groups (FGs), which provide forums for capacity development and market access. Continue reading →

At the 9th International Conference on Sustainable Animal Agriculture for Developing Countries (SAADC2023) held in Lao PDR from November 21-24, 2023, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) conducted a session on advancing sustainable livestock systems. Collaboration opportunities to strengthen Nepal’s livestock sector were top of the agenda when Shri Mahindra Ray Yadav, Nepal’s minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development along with his private secretary, Dinesh Kumar Yadav, visited the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). During the courtesy call to the institute’s New Delhi office on 8 June 2022, Yadav and ILRI’s regional representative for South Asia, Rahman Habibar, discussed technical support in the livestock sector, capacity development and women’s empowerment. A two-day workshop, 20-21 April 2022, kicked off the One CGIAR initiative on Sustainable Animal Productivity for Livelihoods, Nutrition and Gender Inclusion (SAPLING) in Son La Province, Northwest Vietnam. The workshop brought together 80 key stakeholders from the province including local authorities, farmers, researchers, private sector actors and the SAPLING team to discuss ways to make the livestock sector in Northwest Vietnam more productive, resilient, equitable and sustainable. Trong hai ngày 20-21 tháng 04 năm 2022 đã diễn ra hội thảo khởi động sáng kiến mới của One CGIAR ‘Sáng kiến năng suất chăn nuôi bền vững vì sinh kế, dinh dưỡng và hòa nhập giới’ (gọi tắt là SAPLING) tại tỉnh Sơn La. Hội thảo có sự tham dự của khoảng 80 đại biểu, là đại diện của chính quyền địa phương các cấp, nông dân, khu vực tư nhân, nhóm cán bộ nghiên cứu SAPLING nhằm tìm giải pháp giúp chuyển đổi ngành chăn nuôi ở khu vực Tây Bắc, giúp ngành chăn nuôi gia tăng năng suất, khả năng phục hồi, tính công bằng và bền vững hơn.
